It’s no secret; there’s a lot to yoga. But what is dhyana and what is its relevance to modern life? By ‘dhyana’, yoga is referring to the seventh limb, which is a yogic state of contemplation, meditation, awareness, awareness of the inner self and awareness of your inner self.

Yoga is a practice that involves a very specific sequence of postures known as asanas , or postures. The final pose of this sequence is called Dhyana , which means super-consciousness – a state where the mind is completely absorbed in meditation and the body is completely motionless. In addition to this post, I have also written three other articles that focus on the other six limbs of yoga, which can be found here: 1. Asana – 2. Pranayama – 3. Pratyahara – 4. Dharana – 5. Dhyana – 6. Samadhi.

The 7th limb of Yoga is the highest of the limbs which is called Dhyana. Dhyana exists as a single word in Sanskrit, but is often written as Dhyana in English. Dhyana is the deep meditation state where the yogi/yogi reaches beyond the body/mind to connect him/her with Atman/Soul. Dhyana literally means “to meditate” or “to contemplate”.
